An Introduction to One Planet Living

The human population’s appetite for relentlessly eating away at the Earth’s natural riches and resources is growing out of control.

A report produced by the International Resource Panel, a component of the United Nations Environment Programme, indicated that rising consumption has resulted in resource extraction increasing from 22 billion tons in 1970 to 70 billion tons in 2010.  This means that the amount of the planet’s natural resources extracted for human use has tripled in the last 40 years. The report warns that further increases in the use of natural resources will result in critical shortages of materials and an increase in the risk of human conflict. Read More

Who is actually paying for your schools sponsorship deals?

Think twice before opting for bartered sponsorship deals for your school with Office Automation companies. 

These days there appears to be a trend with Office Automation companies offering sponsorship to schools in order to obtain their business, the question and concern this raises with me is “Who is actually paying for the sponsorship, the Office Automation Company or the School?”

I recently engaged with a school that was offered what seemed to be a great sponsorship deal in return for their business. However, upon investigation it turned out that the rates the school were paying had been highly inflated and were laden with high finance costs on their hardware rentals. This resulted in the school (unbeknownst to them) ending up paying for their sponsored incentive.

The holiday season is finally upon us!

I hate to be The Grinch on Christmas and burst the holiday spirit bubble, however, the Christmas season as wonderful as it is, is also the most wasteful time of the year. Every year we spend a fortune on shiny wrapping paper, holiday cards, gifts packaged in Styrofoam, bubble wrap or shrink wrap, adorned with swing tags, sticky tape and all the extra trimmings.

ALL THIS WASTE!! And let’s face it, the kids don’t really worry too much about these extras, they are more interested in what’s inside. The good news is that we can keep our favorite Christmas traditions whilst trying to adhere to eco-friendly values.
